LEGAL SERVICES OF NORTH FLORIDA AND FLORIDA JUSTICE TECHNOLOGY CENTER PARTNER ON STATEWIDE E-LEARNING PLATFORM

Creation of an interactive, online training program will enhance and expand training for legal aid attorneys and advocates.

TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA December 31, 2017 – Legal Services of North Florida (LSNF) and Florida Justice Technology Center (FJTC) will partner on a Technology Initiative Grant from Legal Services Corporation (LSC) to build an interactive learning system for legal aid attorneys and advocates. The system will address challenges in the current training program, providing greater service and benefits to legal aid clients.

Historically, Florida has enjoyed a vigorous legal aid training program, but over the years, reductions in funding have made it difficult to provide the level of training needed to properly service and support Florida’s diverse population. The 24-month project will combine the best of in-person, online and virtual training resources to create an interactive e-learning platform that improves accessibility, collaboration and retention in the statewide training program. The project will also develop a training incubator, to develop a core of trainers from within the legal aid and broader legal community.

LSNF chairs the statewide training committee and administers the Project Director’ Association (PDA) training initiative. LSNF secured the grant from LSC and will provide direction and financial oversight to the project. ”The practice of law requires all levels of engagement to make sure our advocates continue to provide the highest quality of legal services to those in need in our community. The development of this learning system with FJTC brings new tools to to all of Florida’s legal aid staff as they address the ever-changing legal landscape,” said Leslie Powell-Boudreaux, LSNF’s Executive Director.

FJTC is responsible for maintaining the state’s legal advocacy and training website. Building on work and research already done by Legal Services New York City (LSNYC), FJTC will evaluate both stand-alone Learning Management Systems and open source platforms to create a robust training platform that offers an enhanced, cost-effective learning environment. “We’re very excited to work with LSNF on this project,” said Joyce Raby, FJTC’s Executive Director. “Every improvement we make to the state’s training program increases the quality of legal aid services available to our low-income communities.”
