TALLAHASSEE, FL. (February 8, 2019) – FJTC is pleased to announce receipt of a cy pres award totaling $8,900. Attorney Robert Murphy, of the Murphy Law Firm in Ft. Lauderdale, FL., presented the check to FJTC board member, Jayme Cassidy.

The award resulted from cy pres proceeds arising from a recent consumer class action against a North Florida debt collector. Attorney Murphy is a Ft. Lauderdale-based consumer class action attorney and felt that FJTC was a natural fit for this award, in light of its deep commitment to addressing the many civil legal needs of Florida’s most vulnerable populations.

“We encourage attorneys, litigants and judges involved in class litigation to consider FJTC for future cy pres awards,” he said.

The “cy pres” doctrine – which is derived from the French expression “as near as possible”- allows funds remaining in a class settlement to be directed to appropriate non-profits whose mission aligns with the issue at the center of the lawsuit (e.g., workers’ rights, false advertising, etc.).

FJTC is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization focused on increasing access to civil justice through the use of innovative technology.

“We are both excited and grateful to receive this award,” said Joyce Raby, FJTC’s Executive Director. “FJTC is doing some exciting things in access-to-justice technology, and this award will help us expand that work.”
