Press Release – 10/31/17

Enhancements to legal information websites will expand access to legal services for low-income Americans across the country.

TAMPA, FLORIDA October 30, 2017 – Bay Area Legal Services has partnered with Florida Justice Technology Center (FJTC) on a Technology Initiative Grant from Legal Services Corporation (LSC) to continue development of state-specific legal information websites, such as Florida’s The development will focus on enhancing navigation and usability, and ensure users have access to essential services that can help to address their legal concerns.

Legal information websites provide free access to a collection of legal education, tools and resources–such as lawyer referral services, automated court forms, and self-help centers–for a variety of civil legal issues. The 18-month project will implement recommendations made by LSC in their recent evaluation of statewide websites. LSC is the single largest funder of civil legal aid for low-income Americans in the nation.

Bay Area Legal Services secured the grant from LSC and will provide financial oversight to the project. “Bay Area is very pleased to be working on such an important project with FJTC,” said Dick Woltmann, President and CEO of Bay Area. “Together we hope to improve the lives of those we serve.”

FJTC will manage the project and also coordinate development of open source Drupal websites in the legal aid community. “This is a wonderful opportunity to improve and expand legal resources for low-income Americans,” said Joyce Raby, FJTC’s Executive Director. “We’re excited about the potential and look forward to continuing our work with Bay Area Legal Services.”
